Our agent in Namibia collects the best hardwood charcoal from the many producers in the country. These are collected and packed into 50kg bags and assembled until an interlink truck and trailer load is available.

This load, around 34 metric tons, of hardwood charcoal is then imported by us into South Africa and delivered to our factory.
Charcoal
Sorting
The hardwood charcoal is put through a screen and all the small bits are rejected as fines. The balance of the hardwood charcoal is then literally hand sorted by our highly trained staff into restaurant and braai grades. The restaurant grade is the extremely dense blocks of hardwood charcoal which have the highest calorific values and are not suitable for a normal braai. The balance of the hardwood charcoal is then bagged for sale to braai experts so that they can make that perfect fire.

So, this interlink truck and trailer load of hardwood charcoal ends up as:

Briquettes
Crushing
The hardwood charcoal fines are collected, bagged and taken to the crusher.

The crusher is a hammer mill which crushes the hardwood charcoal fines to a very fine powder of pure charcoal.

The crusher has a chute at the bottom of it with bag hanging attachment. This permits the bagging of the hardwood charcoal powder.
Blending
The hardwood charcoal powder is then taken to the blender.

Water and non-carcinogenic, non-toxic binders are added.

No other accelerants like paraffin or fire lighter fluid are added.

Pure compressed hardwood charcoal burns very well and for a long time with a small starting fire. We recommend fire lighters or wood kindling.
Pressing(Briquette Making)
From the blender the mix is transferred to the briquette press by conveyor.

This takes a lot of skill. The feed rate to the briquette press is critical. The consistency of the blended material is also critical. Our skilled staff get it right most of the time to get that perfect pillow shaped briquette.
Drying
Before the briquettes can be bagged for you to purchase, they must be dried.

This is done on open mesh racks which are themselves in a covered open air area.
